Hispania consists of a string of river valleys broken by mountains and plains, from the forested north to the dry south. Wave after wave of invaders from the Muslim south have broken upon its shores, and although they continue to hold strong fortified footholds along the coast and in the south, the ruling dynastry tracing its lineage back to the Visigoths was never conquered and still rules from the capital Toledo. In the west, Lusitanian seafarers sail forth to chart new lands and to harry Muslim shores, bringing back gold and slaves. A handful make the perilous months-long crossing to the fragile trading colonies of the New World, where Latin and Muslim missionaries and merchants compete to woo native kings struggling to rebuild empires brought down by a century of plague.
